MOUNT SHASTA, Calif. -- A rescue mission on Mount Shasta Sunday morning after a man falls thousands of feet down the mountain, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department.

They say Julian Lopez, 43, is in a Redding hospital with serious injuries.

Lopez and a friend were camping at Lake Helen Saturday when they started hiking up Mt. Shasta, and authorities say that's when Lopez slipped up to 2,000 feet down the mountain shattering his helmet, and left him without the ability to move his legs.

They say he was able to call police on his cell phone,  but when the battery died he was forced to spend the night on the rocky outcropping until rescue crews could reach him early Saturday morning.

The men say they've climbed Mount Shasta before, but brought little food or supplies with them on this particular climb.
